| Skip to content IT Blog Ramblings of an IT professional… AWS ELB health checks with Rails force_ssl enabled We have a setup where we are offloading SSL at the ELB level so we don’t actually install any certs or listen on HTTPS ports in our nginx config on our production servers. With force_ssl on, rails will redirect any traffic that does not come in via https to the https version of that page. It does this 2 ways: 1. If the traffic came in on https it is considered secure 2. If the traffic came in on http and has the header X-Forwarded-Proto set to ‘https’ it is considered secure This works great everywhere except for the ELB health checks. The problem is that the ELB health checks are hitting the instances directly and not through the ELB which can offload the SSL and set the proper X-Forwarded-Proto header. So when the health check gets to the instance and tries to hit the http version of the health check, force_ssl will try to redirect it to the HTTPS version. Since we aren’t even |
